THE Road Transport Employers Association of Nigeria (RTEAN) said that it would begin a health insurance scheme for commercial motorcyclists in Anambra State by September this year.
Chairman of the body, Celestine Anere, told newsmen in Awka that the scheme, which is one of the welfare packages for members, is meant to give beneficiaries access medical services from some selected hospitals.
Anere said it was the need to control high blood pressure and other job hazards being suffered by the operators that necessitated the scheme. According to him, the pilot scheme would commence in Awka South council, and later extended to other areas, including Nnewi, Ihiala, Onitsha, Ekwulobia and Umunze.
Each cyclist, he said, is expected to contribute N400 monthly to the scheme, while married members would pay N800 each to cover their wives, beneficiaries’ children under five years would access the services free, while those above five would be considered through a tripartite negotiation.
