In insurance charity should begin at home, operation donate what you have

Charity is said to begin at home, meaning that a person’s first responsibility is for the needs of their own family and friends. But for most insurance companies in Nigeria this saying can’t be considered true as they prefer doing their charity with other sectors products, abandoning theirs and lamenting on low insurance penetration.

As a Promoter of Insurfeel Initiative, a body committed to donation of insurance products/policies to the uninsured and uninformed, I have realised that insurance products remain one of the most cherished items when donated to people.

Another important findings from our engagement with the public while carrying out the donation exercise is that the memory of donated products remain with the beneficiaries for a year, while the cover runs.

As the insurance industry aspires acceptance and growth, the concept of donating insurance products should form part of the corporate social responsibility activities. Companies should donate their products to stimulate interest amongst the uninsured and uninformed.

In line with our ‘Suya Seller Strategy’ which entails tasting before buying, more Nigerians need to taste the impact of insurance if insurance penetration is to be deepened.
