Chuks, I have seen photographs of delegates published on your portal and none of them showed my face. This was how the late Deputy Director-General of Chartered Insurance Institute of Nigeria (CIIN), Mrs Uju Ndubuisi-Chukwu, got this Journalist to photographed her on Wednesday, June 12, 2019 at the just concluded African Insurance Organisation (AIO) 2019 in Johannesburg, South Africa.

She was photographed together with the Managing Director of Wapic Insurance Plc, Yinka Adekoya and a delegate, thereafter, she requested I photographed her alone, which I did.

Prior to that time, I had requested that she paired with delegates from the Institute for a photograph, a request she granted without resistance.

In another encounter, she admonished, that I should take note of the comment made by one of the country’s insurance commissioner, who made a remark on the relationship between the government and insurance industry.

Mrs. Ndubuisi Chukwu, was full of life all the event, before the unexpected happened, when she retired to bed where she lodged at Emperor Palace Hotel, after the closing dinner on Wednesday.

The late DDG was scheduled to travel back to Nigeria on Thursday, June 13, 2019, but she died before the journey.

It was gathered that she returned to her hotel room after the dinner alongside a senior female colleague before they separated and went into their different rooms.

It was also learnt that the colleague knocked on Mrs Chukwu’s hotel room door the following morning, calling her out for breakfast but she did not answer.

The colleague reportedly left, thinking she was still sleeping.

After the breakfast, her colleague again knocked on her door but without getting a response.

When it was time to go to the airport to catch their flight, Mrs Chukwu’s colleague again knocked and called her on her phone, yet there was no response.

The colleague felt Mrs Chukwu had gone to the airport to check in early.

When she got to the airport and did not find her, she hurried back to the hotel, called her number and found that the phone was ringing in her room.

THe colleague then raised the alarm and called the attention of the hotel management.

The door to her hotel room was forced open and Mrs Chukwu was found dead on the bed.

A statement by the CIIN, reads: It is with great sadness that we wish to inform you of the passing on to glory of the Deputy Director General of the Chartered Insurance Institute of Nigeria, Mrs. Elizabeth Uju Ndubuisi-Chukwu who joined her maker on Thursday, 13th June 2019.

Mrs. Ndubisi-Chukwu was a dedicated staff of the Institute and was a valued member of the Institute since she resumed duties at the Institute on the 9th April 2016. During her time at the Institute, she consistently championed the ideals of the Institute, promoting the insurance Industry agenda with her expertise and experience. In particular, the CIIN Breakfast Seminar Series, a program that has become a feature in the insurance industry is one of the legacies that she leaves behind.

She was a member of the Chartered Insurance Institute of Nigeria, a member of the Nigerian Institute of Marketing an ex-council member of the National Council of Registered Insurance Brokers and a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Loan and Risk Management of Nigeria. She was also an active member of the Professional Insurance Ladies Association(PILA).

Mrs.. Uju was kind and always had a pleasant disposition to her work and in all her relations with everyone. At this difficult time, her family and friends constantly remain in our thoughts and prayers as we pray they find the strength to go through this period. We urge you to equally keep them in your thoughts and prayers.

No one is truly dead until the ripples they create in the world die away. The ripples Mrs. Uju Ndubisi Chukwu has stirred in her time at the Institute and in the Insurance industry will last for a lifetime. She will be sorely missed by all.

Adieu Uju
