By EMELIA ENNIN ABBEY

The Ghana Insurance Association (GIA) has inaugurated a 12-member committee to plan a successful hosting of the 45th African Insurance Organisations (AIO) Conference and Annual General Assembly scheduled to be held in Accra next year.

The conference is expected to be attended by about 1,000 delegates from the insurance industry across the continent and beyond.

It has the objectives of promoting inter-African co-operation and developing a healthy insurance and re-insurance industry in Africa.

The decision to award Ghana the hosting rights of the 45th AIO Conference and Annual General Assembly was taken at the end of the 44th AIO Conference and annual general assembly in Kampala, Uganda.

This is the second time Ghana will be hosting the AIO, the first time was in 2005.

The African Insurance Organisation is an umbrella of insurance organisations in Africa, insurance training centres, national and regional insurance associations, as well as regulatory and supervisory bodies.

The AIO currently has 365 members of which 351 are from 47 countries in Africa and 16 associate members from eight overseas countries.

Inauguration

The 12-member local organising committee (LOC) for the 45th AIO conference and General Assembly is chaired by the President of the Ghana Insurers Association, Ms Aretha Duku.

Four sub committees were also inaugurated to assist with the planning of the conference: Finance and Sponsorship, Transport and Accommodation, Secretariat and Programmes and Entertainment and Publicity.

Before swearing in members of the committees, Ms Duku reiterated Ghana’s readiness to live up to expectation.

Speaking on behalf of the members of the LOC, Professor Adom-Frimpong said it was an honour to be given opportunity to serve the industry, adding that the members of the LOC would work hard to deliver to expectation.
