Lagos State Government has reiterated its commitment to equip her workers through training and retraining to enable them key into the developmental agenda of Governor Akinwunmi Ambode.

The Honourable Commissioner Ministry of Establishments, Training and Pensions, Dr. Akintola Benson Oke disclosed this today while declaring open a two-day workshop tagged: “Effective Strategic Management for Repositioning and Higher Responsibilities” Organized by the Ministry in conjunction with Messrs Novo Consult Limited in Lagos.

In his keynote address entitled: Effective Strategic Management for Repositioning and Higher Responsibilities, he maintained that the state has flagged off various training, seminars and programmes aimed at making the state’s civil service more proactive.

According to him, the workshop was organised to training directors drawn from different ministries and agencies in the state, adding that the training became necessary due to the roles the directors play in the state.

He noted that the training is aimed at re-strategies the workforce, stressing that the state seeks to ensure its workforce get the best of training in the country and compete globally.

“The workforce remains the real engine of growth and our workforce is the best in the whole of Nigeria. So the governor in his wisdom has decided to ensure continuous and adequate exercise to enable the public service in the state which is the real engine room to compete effectively with their counterparts not only in Nigeria but in United Kingdom, United States and around developed economies.

“We are not limiting our success to only Nigeria, we are thinking outside the box to make public servants who are regarded as engine to compete favourably in any condition they see themselves across the country, Africa and in the world. That is why the governor has approved this training,” he said.

Adedayo Famakinwa and MD/CEO Novo Consult Limited, Ovo Longe at the event.

He said the take home lesson for managers of men and resources is that in order to ensure that their strategic team is ready to make effective decisions, they should look carefully in the mirror, and enquire if they do encourage debate, even argument, among their team about key decisions, “or do you encourage blind alignment with the organisation’s positions? Remember that the well-documented occurrences of groupthink (as exemplified in President John Kennedy’s ill-fated bay of Pigs invasion) occur not because of oppressive or stifling leaders, but due to collegial and fond relationships, leaving deliberants unwilling to rock the boat, or to voice contrary opinions,” he added.

Continuing he said: “The importance of strategy, strategic planning, and strategic management has been proved and validated over the years and, in fact, over the centuries. From the writings of Aristotle to the compiled wisdom of Oriental philosophers such as Sun Tzu, and from the ancient history of Europe to regnant modern day business philosophies, one finds that to have a strategy is half the battle and to effectively manage a good strategy is everything.

“The opening statement above underscores the importance of this seminar for the Lagos State public service. It is my delight that this particularly training was approved and is to be delivered today. The enormous value that knowledge and skills training bring to bear on the attainment of the strategic objectives of the government and the public service of Lagos State has long been emphasised by His Excellency, Governor Akinwunmi Ambode to whom we owe a debt of gratitude for many of the impactful and resourceful trainings and seminars that the Ministry of Establishments, Training and Pensions (MET&P) has been executing in recent times.”
