This event provides me a unique opportunity to express my gratitude, first of all, to God Almighty, and also to you all, my professional colleagues, for your staunch support since the commencement of my tenure and the elevation of our council to enviable heights. I must put on records that the last two years has been eventful and challenging; bothering primarily on the economy and the regulatory environment.
I must express my appreciation for the confidence, support and cooperation that you have given to me since my emergence as the 19thPresident of the Council, especially, the Management Committee, Governing Board. At the take off of my tenure, we took a strong position that the Council could be more efficient in terms of service delivery and value addition – this we pursued vigorously through various strategies that was deployed by my team.
We strategically focused on my Thrust of Office which includes:
1. Institution Building / Empowering the Secretariat
2. Seamless succession plan
3. Streamlining the office of the President to ceremonial roles as obtainable in other professions.
4. Value additions to Members
5. Prudence and cost management as well as acceleration of revenue sources for the Council.
6. Enforcements of ethical standards.
7. Effective collaboration with other industry operators
8. Effective collaboration with NAICOM
The task of leading our Council and sustaining the finest legacies of professionalism and adherence to ethics envisaged by our founding fathers, has been rewarding; as with your support we have modestly turned some of the perceived obstacles to stepping stones for success. I am persuaded beyond reasonable doubts that the herculean tasks of ensuring that ours is an enviable profession has been sustained and in the finest tradition of the NCRIB’s succession planning structure that will continue into the future.
I congratulate my very good friend, Mr. Eddie Efekoha and his team from Consolidated Hallmark Insurance Plc, our August visitors hosting our August edition of the Members’ Evening. At the appropriate time, the Management team of Consolidated Hallmark Insurance Plc will be called upon to address this august gathering. Going by antecedents, I am quite sure that the Managing Director also wearing the prominent cap of the President of the Chartered Insurance Institute of Nigeria (CIIN) would apprise us with feats recorded by the company and areas where it needs our support as Brokers.
• NATIONAL ISSUES
Let me use this medium to congratulate the 43 Federal Ministers of the Federal Republic of Nigeria recently sworn in by President Mohammed Buhari. It is our utmost believe that the team would work together to revive the nation’s economy by activating all the latent natural resources that the Country is blessed with and enhance her economic vibrancy. Specifically, there are areas of urgent attention such as infrastructural development, sustenance of efforts on construction of roads and development of other means of transportation. We also further enjoin them to give utmost priority to security and sustainable supply of public power generation that would translate to adequate power supply to Nigerians, considering the fact that power is the linchpin of enduring economic development of the nation.
We wish them a successful tenure.
NATIONAL CONFERENCE AND ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING
I am most delighted to inform you that preparation towards the 2019 National Insurance Brokers Conference & Exhibition and the Annual General Meeting of our Council is on course. The Conference and AGM would be held in Transcorp Hilton, Abuja from Wednesday, October 30 to Thursday, October 31, 2019. The Secretariat and the Events Organizing Committee are now dotting the I’s and crossing the T’s to ensure a very successful outing. Interestingly, the event will climax with the Investiture of the 20th President of the Council in the person of Dr. (Mrs.) Bola Onigbogi. I believe that the in-coming President is seriously warming up to take our Council to greater heights. I am delighted to inform you that registration for the Conference has commenced in earnest and it would strictly be an online registration. I implore you to take advantage, early.
ADDING VALUE TO MEMBERS
You would recall that one of the focus of the Governing Board is to continually give value to members and enhance their compliance with regulatory requirements expected of them. I am most delighted to inform you the Council provided lots of training opportunities for members. This has definitely enhanced participants’ skills in handling insurance and technical related issues. We are not going to relent on our oars. Also, realizing that the Council must continually recognize the roles of both past and present practitioners who have played significant roles, it is heartwarming to note that the Council held the maiden edition of the “Celebrating our Heroes” programme where Late Mr. T.A Braithwaite who this hall is named after and Olola Olabode Ogunlana were both honoured. The main essence of this is to bring to the fore those past leaders and pathfinders of our profession, celebrating them, in order to trigger the interest of the younger generation to contribute more to the Council. The event which would be institutionalized already has a listing of icons who would be celebrated in succession. It is my belief that the programme has significantly added to the image of our Council in the comity of other professions.
CONCULSION
All that starts well ends well. I cannot thank you enough for your support for making my tenure successful. I also wish to thank Consolidated Hallmark Plc once again for hosting this event and by so doing reaffirming itself as one of the most insurance broker friendly underwriter in Nigeria.
Do have a splendid evening.
SHOLA TINUBU, FCIB
