SPEECH DELIVERED BY THE PRESIDENT OF THE NIGERIAN COUNCIL OF REGISTERED INSURANCE BROKERS, MR. SHOLA TINUBU, FCIB AT THE FEBRUARY 2019 EDITION OF NCRIB MEMBERS’ EVENING HELD ON TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 26, 2019 IN LAGOS.
• Distinguished members of the NCRIB Governing Board,
• Top Management team of Linkage Assurance Plc,
• Chairman, Airline Operators of Nigeria, Captain Nogie Meggison,
• Our guests here present,
• Gentlemen of the Press,
• Ladies and Gentlemen,
It is my pleasure to welcome you all to the first edition of NCRIB Members’ Evening in 2019 which is being hosted by Linkage Assurance Plc. The NCRIB Members’ Evening is a bi-monthly gathering of Insurance Brokers where the exchange of professional ideas and interface with the host Underwriter take place. Since the NCRIB has lifted the bar of its practice and relationship with strategic institutions, we would like to appreciate and congratulate our host, Linkage Assurance Plc for being the first to host this event in 2019. While congratulating the Managing Director/CEO, Mr. Daniel Braie on his appointment as MD of “Linkage” it is our hope that the company would witness tremendous lift in its perception index by Insurance Brokers translating in enhanced bottom line for the company. Customarily, at the appropriate time in the course of this event, members would seize the opportunity to ask questions from the management team of the company on any issue that is germane to the company’s growth and survival and to our relationship.
Similarly, I must appreciate the presence of the Airline Operators of Nigeria (AON), ably led here today by Captain Nogie Meggison. It is quite pleasing that AON deemed it appropriate to honour our invitation. I am sure that your presence here will definitely enrich the knowledge of our Members as well as members of the Association on the need for enhanced collaboration in Aviation Insurance. Interestingly, I was part of the team that visited AON, under the leadership of Captain Meggison few years ago. It is my take that an event of this nature would open the doors for better understanding of the role of Insurance Brokers in the Insurance Value Chain. Of course, Insurance brokers are the only professionals who intermediate in the insurance value chain and ensure that their clients (be they individual or corporate) fully maximize the benefits of their insurance placement.
NATIONAL ISSUES:
2019 GENERAL ELECTION.
This event provides me an opportunity to join many meaningful Nigerians to congratulate everyone that voted during the last election, this is our civic responsibility as citizens of Nigeria and I hope, that at the end of the day we will all have the desired peace and progress in the Country.
I would further like to reemphasis that the pursuit of peace and good governance for sustainable development should be addressed frontally. Without this, business environment may continually remain in jeopardy. At this point, I would like to call on relevant authorities to address the dangers that may work against the success of the remaining part of the elections.
NCRIB PUBLICATION OF ELIGIBLE MEMBERS:
One of our statutory responsibilities every year is to publish the names of all eligible members of the Nigerian Council of Registered Insurance Brokers in National Dailies. I would like to inform you that the Council would definitely carry out this statutory obligation shortly. Our experience in the past have shown that many Brokers that failed to meet up with the requirements for the publication often face significant challenges in business due to the attendant negative image that non-inclusion in the list attracts. I am urging you to regularize your membership status with the Secretariat without further delay. Please do not wait for the time your NAICOM renewal is due. All NCRIB Certificates are due for renewal every 1st of January.
2019 BIBA CONFERENCE AND OTHER INTERNATIONAL TRIP
One of the major agenda of the current Management team of the Council under my leadership as the President/Chairman, Governing Board is to continue to strengthen the ties of the Council with other relevant international bodies. One of such is the British Insurance Brokers Association (BIBA). In 2018, over 20 Nigerian delegates, under the aegis of NCRIB attended BIBA conference and NCRIB seminar at Aon; an international conference of insurance professional that draws participation from over 50 countries of the world. This year, our projection is not to have less than 50 delegates across the various arms of insurance industry. I must inform you that preparations are in top gear as formal notifications are being sent to all members and interested insurance operators. The 2019 edition of the Conference, as usual, holds in Manchester, the United Kingdom between Monday, May 13 and Friday, May 19, 2019. The theme is “Leading the Way”. NCRIB have also organized a seminar in AON this would also afford delegates from Nigeria the benefit to interact with a team of professionals from Aon and Lloyds Brokers in London.
In a similar vein, the 46th Conference and Annual General Assembly of the African Insurance Organisation will take place from the 9th to 12th of June, 2019 in Johannesburg, South Africa. The Conference is organized by the Insurance Institute of South Africa (IISA), under the chairmanship of Thokozile Mahlangu, Chief Executive Officer of IISA. The Theme of the Conference is: “Insurance Penetration in Africa: Insuring the Uninsured.” The Conference will take place at: Emperors Palace. I would like to encourage as many as possible to attend this event. The Registration for the event is now open.
REVIEW OF NCRIB RULES / Corporate Governance for the Secretariat.
In view of the avowed intention of this administration to bequeath a formidable institution, it is heartwarming to inform members that the Legal Committee is already setting in motion the review of the NCRIB Rules and Ethics, and also poised to address sundry issues relating to institution building. The Secretariat has been directed to circulate the rules to members and elicit their input to make the rules and Ethics robust and a product of wide consensus.
BREAKFAST SEMINAR
Permit me to appreciate the good reception that the maiden Breakfast Series of the Council attracted. The seminar is one of the initiatives put in place to enhance the intellectual and professional capacity of members. Even though I had the honour of featuring as speaker at the first edition, subsequent editions will attract top rate professionals with whom members could exchange thoughts. While not resting on our oars, we implore all members to continually avail themselves of this opportunity to up our game and knowledge in this fast paced knowledge-driven economy.
CONCLUSION
Once again, I would like to thank you for coming and appreciate Linkage Assurance for hosting this great Evening. God bless.
SHOLA TINUBU
President/Chairman Governing Board
