Profiles of new PenCom DG, Chairman

Aliyu Dikko

Aliyu Dikko was the pioneer Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer (MD/CEO) of Premium Pension Limited (PPL) until he retired in 2011 and was almost immediately elected as the Chairman, Board of Directors of the Company, which he left in February.

Before becoming the MD/CEO of PPL, Mr. Dikko was the Chief Executive Officer of United Bank for Africa Plc (UBA) until May 10th 2005, when he voluntarily disengaged from the services of the bank to pursue private initiatives. During the period of his headship at the UBA – one of the largest financial institutions in Nigeria – Aliyu Dikko was rated among the top 20 CEOs in Nigeria by the Vanguard Newspaper in the year 2004. He was also rated by the News Magazine as one of the top 50 acclaimed business titans in 2004. Aliyu Dikko was also one of Business Day newspaper’s 20 CEO’s with high integrity. Mr. Dikko was at various times during his tenure at UBA, the Chairman of the Board of UBA Capital and Trust Ltd and UBA Securities Ltd. He was also the Executive Director Treasury and Consumer Banking, Commercial and Investment Banking and the Deputy Managing Director before he was appointed the Managing Director and CEO of the bank.

Mr. Dikko started his banking career with Icon Ltd (Merchant Bankers), a former affiliate of the USA based Morgan Guaranty Trust. He joined Icon as an officer in Credit and Marketing Department after a first degree in Accounting from Ahmadu Bello University (ABU) Zaria and a Masters degree in Finance from the University of Manchester, England. Aliyu Dikko left Icon Merchant Bank as Senior Manager and Area Manager, Kaduna Area Office after spending nine years with the bank. Mr Dikko joined the newly established Urban Development Bank Plc from Icon Merchant Bank as the Controller Banking and Finance. After working for a period of two & half years with the Urban Development Bank, Mr. Dikko joined UBA where he progressed from the position of Deputy General Manager to become the Managing Director within the span of about ten years.

During his 21 years career in the financial services industry, Aliyu Dikko attended many courses and conferences, including the Citibank Correspondent Bank School at Athens, Greece in 1985. Mr Dikko was top in a class of 25 different nationalities in the credit Modules of the programme. Other top Management development programmes he has attended are: Equipment Leasing workshop, organised by Amembal and Isom Lease Consultants, Utah, USA; Exceptional Sales performance and face-to-face selling skills, the Forum Corporation USA; the Strategic Management in Banking at INSEAD, Fontableau France; and the Bank Strategy Masters Class Euromoney London. Mr. Dikko also attended the NCR Self Service Universe Executive conference in Athens, Greece and the Fundamentals of Risks Management organised by the International Faculty of Finance, London. He is widely travelled and well exposed in International Finance.

Funso Doherty

Funso has over two decades of experience in investment management. Previously, he was the Pioneer CEO and CIO of ARM Pension Managers, which he led from inception to become one of Nigeria’s leading Pension Fund Investment Managers. He was also the first chairman of the Pension Fund Operators Association of Nigeria (PENOP) from 2007-2010.

In his extensive experience as an investment management professional, Funso has held a number of increasingly senior positions in leading foreign and local investment management firms including Goldman Sachs & Company and PNC Advisors in the United States of America, and ARM in Nigeria. He started his career in the Lagos office of Arthur Andersen.

Funso holds a Masters degree in Business Administration (MBA) from Harvard Business School and a B. Sc. in Accounting from the University of Lagos. He is a CFA Charterholder, a Trustee of the CFA Society Nigeria and a member of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria.
