Winners of maiden AIO-YIPS Africa NextGen Insurance Award 2022

Oyelere Oluwaseun, a Nigerian and staffer of Linkage Assurance Plc, emerged the winner of the maiden African Insurance Organisation-Young Insurance Professionals – AIO-YIPS Africa NextGen Insurance Award 2022.

The Excellence Award, which is in recognition of his excellent contributions to the development of Insurance on Africa, was awarded to him at the just concluded AIO conference in Nairobi, Kenya.

Oyelere is a Manager and leads the Underwriting Unit of the Financial Institutions & Direct Corporate SBU – a Strategic Business Unit within the Technical Department of Linkage Assurance Plc., the Company he joined in 2014. Before this time, he worked with Access Bank Plc., Corporate Operations Department. Also, he is the current Chairman of the Accident Offices Committee of the Nigerian Insurers Association (NIA), having previously served as the Deputy Chairman of the same Committee.

He is an Associate of the Chartered Insurance Institute of Nigeria, a Graduate Member of the Nigerian Institute of Management, a Member of the Nigerian Actuarial Society, and a Student Member of the Certified Actuarial Analyst (Global). He holds a Master of Business Administration (Finance) from the University of Lagos, Bachelor of Science Degree in Economics from the Joseph Ayo Babalola University, Osun State, a Higher National Diploma (HND) in Insurance from the Lagos State Polytechnic, Ikorodu, Lagos and a National Diploma (ND) in Insurance from The Polytechnic, Ibadan, Oyo State. He earned a Credit Qualification from the Young Insurance Professional program (YIPP) sponsored by Africa Re in partnership with the London School of Insurance.

He has consistently displayed expertise in General Insurance Underwriting, Technical Analysis & Strategies, Business Process Management; Business Analysis, Business Support & Relationship Development; Project & Innovation Management; Quality Assurance & Control, Team Development & Management and Enabling Management Efficiency with enviable leadership, top-flight consensus-building and problem-solving skills.

He is passionate about insurance penetration and the development of insurance practice in Nigeria. In pursuit of his passion for the growth of the Insurance Industry, he provided solutions to identified challenges facing the Insurance Industry in Nigeria through his literary/research works on “Marketing of Insurance Businesses in Nigeria: Problems and Prospects”, “Impact of Economic Recession on the Nigerian Insurance Industry”, “Impact of Financial Inclusion on Output Growth in Nigeria” and the “Impact of Supervision on Financial Stability and Performance of the Nigerian Insurance Industry”.

The echoes of his passion for the deepening of insurance were recognized by the Nigerian Insurance Industry, with his back-to-back election as the Deputy Chairman of the Accident Offices Committee of the Nigerian Insurers Association (NIA) before becoming the current Chairman of the Committee. In this capacity, he has contributed to the development of technical skills and competencies required to promoting insurance penetration by organizing and facilitating retreats that focused on harnessing opportunities and dealing with challenges associated with Global Trends and Emerging Risks. Presently, he is working with his team to organize a retreat on “Disrupting the Disrupter: Optimizing Technology for the Advancement of Insurance Penetration”.

He has remarkably contributed to strengthened technical competencies in the Insurance Industry through insurance retreats, seminars and trainings. Noteworthy is the significant role he has played in the partnership between the Nigerian Insurers Association (NIA) and the Lagos State Government to increase insurance penetration through the Lagos State Digital Compulsory Insurance Project (LSDCIP) and the Lagos State Building Control Agency (LASBCA) Project, where he served in the following capacities:
• Member of the NIA’s Technical Committee & IT Committee for the Lagos State Digital Compulsory Insurance Project (LSDCIP). An enlarged project for the review and enforcement of Compulsory Occupier’s Liability Insurance (Public Buildings) in Lagos State.
• Member, NIA’s Technical Committee for the Lagos State Building Control Agency (LASBCA) Project – Partnership with Lagos State Government’s implementation of the Compulsory Builder’s Liability Insurance.

He is excellence personified and epitomizes professionalism. Recognizing his unflinching sight on achieving leadership excellence at various fronts and commitment towards the building of solid foundation for deepening the penetration and growth of insurance in Nigeria, he earned the following awards from his current employment:
• MD/CEO’s Recognition Award for Performance as the “Best Staff of the Year (2021)”.
• CEO’s Recognition Award for Commitment to the Linkage Training School as an In-house Facilitator (2021). A recognition of extraordinary commitment to the development of Technical Knowledge across the Company.
• CEO’s Recognition Award for Performance as the “Best Staff in Underwriting Department” (2018).

His passion for academic and professional excellence has not gone unnoticed as he is relentlessly contributing to improved knowledge through tutorials, lectures and trainings. A recognition of these unique identities earned him several Academic Awards.

He is passionate about sustainable development and social inclusion. A testament to this is the Abia State Governor’s Award, which he earned for his immense contribution to the socio-economic development of the State in 2012.

The second position was occupied by a Ghanaian, the Managing Director, iRisk Management Limited, Sheila Wristberg, who is an insurance and risk management professional with decade’s of experience in providing professional services to entities across industries in and out Ghana.

The third position went to a Kenyan, Insurance and Business Development Manager at Agritask (Africa), Lawrence kenduiywa, who has been working in a fast-paced insurance upscale environment over the past 10
years.

His experience lies in product development, review of statistical pricing analysis,
advanced data analysis, risk modelling, business analytics, geographic information system data analysis and spatial representation.

He brings significant expertise in the actuarial field having worked for leading ag-insurance and medical insurance companies.

He is currently the Insurance and Business Development Manager at Agritask (Africa), an ag-tech company that supports various stakeholders within the agriculture space through
integration of technology to streamline ag-protocols.

The transformation entails use of
insurance solutions and other climate smart agricultural technologies to mitigate effects of climate change.

As a risk champion, Lawrence has undertaken different assignments supporting various
countries within Africa in development of tools to enhance resilience.

He is currently concluding his MBA from the University of Suffolk (UK) while pursuing his actuarial professional papers, he has a B.Sc. Actuarial Science from Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture & Technology and has a reinsurance certification from the London School of Insurance.

The fourth position was won by a Ghanaian, Senior Underwriter, Ghana Reinsurance Plc, Ms. Esther Esime Siale.

While the fifth position went to an Ivorian, Managing Director Optimus Insurance Brokers, Hermann N’zi, who has 14 years of experience in insurance marketing.
