The Chartered Insurance Institute of Nigeria (CIIN) has implored individuals saddled with responsibilities of overseeing its examinations to adhere strictly to stipulated codes, conducts and corporate governance principles put in place to produce esteemed professionals for the insurance industry.
The Chairaman, Examination Committee of the Institute, Rev. Olusola Ladipo-Ajayi, stated this today at the 2020 Chief Examiners’ Workshop, organised by the Examination Department of the CIIN in Lagos. He urged both chief examiners and examiners from Nigeria and the West African Insurance Institute (WAII), who attended the workshop to live above board, shun compromise, stressing that their works required serious commitment.
He implored them not to easily trade the confidence reposed on them, for any gesture, adding that their dues far exceeded the jobs of security personnels, as they determine the type of people who manage the affairs of the industry which is built on utmost good faith.
The past Director Education, CIIN, Ebun Ayeni, speaking on the theme of the workshop, entitled: ‘The Examiner and the Three C’S: Codes, Conduct and Corporate Governance’ noted that the institute remains resolute in its drive towards the production of insurance practitioners who are fully equipped to practice insurance anywhere in the world, hence, examiners are expected to exercise personal judgement in resolving ethical dilemma which may occur in course of their duties. “No one is an island, in all case of doubts, examiners and enjoined to consult with appropriate level of authority for proper guidance,” he added.
According to him, “the qualifying examination of the Chartered Insurance Institute of Nigeria is hinged upon a high standard of work set to enable holders of the institute’s professions qualifications grapple with the continuously demanding.”
On roles to be played by examiners, he maintained that they are to: organise their team to meet the needs of the task to be completed; establish a system of personal targets; ensure the correct decision are taken at the right time; consider how task can be allocated to their team in order to maximize their contribution; establish a system for monitoring results and performance; maintain discipline and control through the effective use of authority and seek to encourage co-operation and commitment.
