Great Nigeria Insurance (GNI) yesterday denied insuring the collapsed five-storey building in Lekki, Lagos in which 35 people perished.
This is contrary to the claim of the owner, MessrsLekki Worldwide Estate Limited, promoters of Lekki Gardens.
Its Manager, Mr Steve Agbiboa on Sunday told The Nation that the building was insured by GNI, following enquiries on whether or not the building was insured as required by law.
Over 34 people reportedly died in the collapsed building including artesans, labourers, hawkers, women and children while the number of those injured is yet to be made public.
With the denial of GNI, the firm has violated the Insurance Act 2003 and the Lagos State government law on Insurance of Buildings under construction.
GNI Managing Director, Mrs Cecillia Osipitan said the firm did not insure the building and does not know anything about it.
She said: “I do not know the company, MessrsLekki Worldwide Estate Limited, promoters of Lekki Gardens and it was not insured by GNI.’’
