The Guild of Marine Surveyors has vowed to periodically review its membership and has asked member companies to register their staff individually and encourage them to attend trainings that would broaden their knowledge and prepare them for the future.
President, Guild of Marine Surveyors, Wale Adetoro, said this yesterday at the Guild’s Annual General Meeting (AGM) in Lagon, adding that last year, the body carried out a membership review leading to the delisting of some members who had shown commitment to the Guild by their huge outstanding of dues.
According to him, some members are in the habit of rushing to join the Guild only to obtain membership certificates to bid for jobs and abscond thereafter. This, he said will no longer be acceptable as membership review will therefore be carried out periodically.
“We have few members joining us in the course of the year. Our current role stands at 60 corporate members and 11 student members. Our membership list is on our website. We are encouraging all member companies to register their staff individually and encourage them to attend all our trainings. This will broaden their knowledge and prepare them to stand on their own in future,” he posited.
He stated that the Guild has renewed its membership of the International Institute of Marine Survey, London as a corporate supporting member, stressing that the Guild has already received notification of 2023 membership renewal, to which it shall attend.

He said with this new development, the Guild’s secretariat will be more strengthened to cater for the needs of its members.
He submitted that all members of the Guild are encouraged to have an insurance policy on professional indemnity in place, stating that It is advisable each firm has at least a cover of N1 million by the start of the new year.
Adetoro maintained that as promise last year, all financial members have been issued with membership certificates and a free reflective jacket, adding that the Guild would work on the identity cards for members in the coming year to distinguish them from others practicing in the field.
He noted that for the first time in the history of existence of the Guild as an association, it were able to initiate a group life/accident insurance for members, stressing that those who have not keyed into this policy are advised to do so without further delay.
The premium for the cover, he said is just N5,000 for N500,000 death/permanent disability cover, adding that it also covers temporary disablement and moderate medical expenses.
