JOHANNESBURG (AP) – Insurers have paid out on a life insurance policy for South Africa national team captain Senzo Meyiwa, who was fatally shot more than a year ago in what police said was an attempted house robbery.
The goalkeeper’s killer still has not been caught despite a 13-month police investigation.
Premier Soccer League chairman Irvin Khoza said the payout covered Meyiwa for injury and “untimely death.” The league has received the money and Meyiwa’s family and other beneficiaries will be notified, Khoza said.
The league didn’t say how much the payout was but South African media reported it was about $350,000.
Meyiwa, a popular and charismatic player for South Africa and Soweto club Orlando Pirates, was shot by an intruder at his girlfriend’s house in a township near Johannesburg in October 2014.
Police said it was a botched house robbery and announced they were seeking three suspects. A man was arrested days after the shooting and charged with murder, but the charges were dropped and he was released. Police have not made any other arrests.
