UNILAG 1994 graduates of Actuarial Science & Insurance stock departmental office, grants six students bursary award

The University of Lagos 1994 graduates of Actuarial Science & Insurance have stocked the departmental office, with new sets of furniture, installed a modern photocopying machine and grants bursary award of N200,000 each to six excellent students.

The President of the 1994 graduates, Samson Akinyemi, at the 30th year anniversary held yesterday in University of Lagos, said the donations were part of giving back to the community and lending hands to students who are going through what some of them passed through back then in the school.

He submitted that the group couldn’t wait till they have their premises stocked with money before choosing to give back to the society.

Akinyemi noted that the six excellent students were drawn from 200 level to 400 level, adding that they worked with the department to achieve the selection based on some criteria.

He called on graduates from other sets not to wait till eternity before coming to the aid of their alma mater and also to encourage the cross-section of students that tomorrow is waiting for them.

He stressed that the students need to start interacting with the industry to share their future in the same vain, excellence pays.

“Great Akokaites, do not waste your destiny. This institution needs you and the world around you needs you too,” he posited.

The Vice Chancellor University of Lagos, Prof. Folasade Ogunsola, appreciated the graduates for the donations, while calling for continuous supports for the university.

She called on all alumni to be good brand ambassadors of the university, adding that the university would continue to collaborate with the public to raise well equipped students fit and prepared to meet the needs of the moment.

Head of Department Actuarial Science & Insurance of the university Prof. Dallah Hamodu, appreciated the alumni for the gesture, stressing that the department has grown over the years as it now parades seven professors and about 200 students.

He said the department in the last convocation, produced 20 first class students from actuarial science and 10 students from insurance.

According to him, the department recently revised its curriculum to meet the present needs of the insurance and pension sector.

He submitted that to effectively align with insurance and pension practices, the department collaborated the National Insurance Commission (NAICOM); National Pension Commission (PenCom), trade groups in the sectors so as to meet employers expectations.

The Dean Faculty of Management Sciences of the university Prof. Abdul Sulaimon, noted that the faculty remains one of the best as it has continued to produce highest number of first class students.

He appreciated the gesture and implored the public to continue to support the education system.

Beneficiaries of the bursary award are: Bello Olayinka, 200 level Actuarial Science, with CGPA 4.94; Oyebanji Olufunmi, level 300 Actuarial Science, CGPA 3.89; Mustapha Yetunde, level 400 Actuarial Science, CGPA 4.77; Akinola Makayia, level 200 Insurance, CGPA 4.03; Olufemi Godwin, level 300, CGPA 4.72 and Tajudeen Abike, level 400 Insurance, CGPA 4.87.
