Since the Inspector General of Police Dr. Kayode Egbetokun announced the enforcement of third party motor insurance, which will commence February 1, 2025, it is expected that education and awareness programmes should be organised for commercial bus owners and drivers, who are considered top violators and buyers of fake policies.

Educating these group of vehicle owners and drivers is necessary as about 80 per cent of the said 70 per cent uninsured vehicles in the country belong to them.

Moreso, most of the third party associated risks on the roads come from them. Therefore they need to be informed why they should insure their vehicles and comply with the insurance law.

The insurance industry needs premium from commercial vehicles as well as the private, therefore, they should not be neglected.

As the Police is expected to effectively enforce the law, gaps should not be created for defaults, especially on commercial vehicles owners, who would prefer to settle some officers instead of buying genuine policies for their vehicles.

We expect insurance operators to have a robust relationship with members of road transport operators and leverage the relationship to organise education programs for them on benefits of insuring their vehicles and having other allied insurance products.

The enforcement is expected to eradicate the nuisance of begging on the roads by motorists, especially commercial vehicle drivers. The drivers should be well informed that with just N15,000 premium they don’t need to beg other motorists when an accident occurs.
