Retail Insured Family Association of Nigeria ( RIFAN), a non-profit organisation whose major priority is to restore confidence of the Insured on insurance in Nigeria, through the Director-General, Ali Theophilus Ugwu, has commended the drastic move by the Inspector General of Police of Nigeria, IGP Kayode Egbetokun and NAICOM Boss, Olusegun Ayo Omosehin, to enforce Third Party Motor Insurance in Nigeria and other compulsory Insurance.
Aligning with NAICOM and NPF to ensure the effectiveness of the enforcement, he shows his readiness to collaborate fully with the implementation committee and other relevant agencies to accomplish the vision which he termed as a perfect deal to turn around the fortune of the insurance industry.
Following the objectives of the joint committee formed to enforce compliance by vehicle owners, RIFAN reaffirms it’s availability, readiness and capacity to take proper visibility and sensitization of the development to her members and the general public in all the nooks and crannies of Nigeria through its robust and stratified channels.
Inorder to avoid motorist being caught unaware, he maintained there is need to expand the public enlightenment space considering the fact less 30% of over 14 million vehicles on Nigeria road are properly insured, adding that RIFAN has all it takes to effectively utilize its platforms to raise the bar in this regards.
Stressing further, he reasoned that it’s imperative to acknowledge the commitments of NAICOM and NPF to prioritize the safety and protection of general public through this singular move of enforcing compliance of vehicle owners to compulsory Insurance policy adding that the implementation of the policy will not only increase the confidence of road users but as well reassure the genuineness of Insurance policy in an emerging economy like ours.
RIFAN urges the relevant agencies to place modalities on grand to get ride of unlicenced insurance agents, quacks who may utilize this avenue to advance their illicit trade, maintaining that insurance should be made more professional and the 3rd party motor insurance is the largest portfolio that the industry should not overlook.
Finally, training of personnel to professionally engage the motorist during the enforcement would be of an added advantage as many of the motorist may envisage the enforcement as victimization if proper professional ethics is not administered in the process of the enforcement. However, it’s better to take the bull by the horns and engage the motorist for the safety and protection of life and properties of the general public, he concludes.
