Journalists from Africa specialising in re/insurance reporting will be honoured tomorrow during the first Pan-African Reinsurance Journalism Awards.

Seychelles will host the awards and the ceremony will take place tomorrow at Eden Bleu Hotel, starting at 6.30pm.

Launched by Continental Reinsurance Plc, the awards seek to develop re/insurance reporting in Africa and to encourage journalists to develop their knowledge on the sector and more importantly to recognise the outstanding work of journalists from across Africa.

Journalists from across Africa had until February 29 to submit their entries for the inaugural award ceremony.

“The insurance and reinsurance sector has a valuable role to play in Africa’s economic growth and development and we want to recognise the respected contribution of the media to the sector’s growth,” said the Group MD/CEO of Continental Reinsurance Dr Femi Oyetunji.

He added: “The awards are an extension of our continued commitment to the advancement of excellence in the industry.”

The award’s four categories are: 1. Best re/insurance feature article, 2. Best re/insurance news reporting, 3. Best re/insurance industry analysis and commentary, and 4. Pan-African re/insurance journalist of the year award.

An international judging panel comprising industry experts and academics in journalism is judging the Continental Reinsurance Journalism Awards entries.

The judging panel will evaluate all submitted materials according to the quality of information and how it contributes to raising awareness of the insurance and reinsurance sector in Africa.

During Thursday’s ceremony Larrey Chetty of the Seychelles Media Commission will be a guest speaker, while Seychelles Investment Board chief executive Rupert Siméon will make a presentation about investment opportunities in Seychelles.
