Having the phone ringing as usual is one of the nightmare of retirement. This is because most loyalists shift their allegiance to the rave of the moment.

When I retired, I observed that the phone stopped ringing as it used to do. This is one of the most touching words I heard from a retiree at the 2024 Inspenonline Retirement Summit.

Indeed, there are a lot to learn about life in retirement. I feel lesson from retirees should be utilise to prepare for better retirement life.

Communication is said to be the life wire of human existence, hence, adjusting to a life of less communication having enjoyed robust dialogue with people in active days, would really be complex.

To keep your communication going – the phone ringing – in retirement, you have to do the following before you retire.

*Keep good relationship

Relationship always reproduce what we put into it. To sustain effective and efficient communication, you should cultivate a relationship that cut across all classes of people. Relationship should be built around both the big and small.
A relationship tailored to the top echelon, would reduce once you leave the space, likewise within the lower class. Relationship within the top echelon and the lower class should be maintained at all time, in spite our position.

*Goodness

One of the best ways to sustain robust communication in retirement is by expending goodness to all that are around us.
Beneficiaries of our goodness, would remain with us both tick and thin.

*Wall-less

Building walls around us to bar people from easily reaching us, would definitely reduce the calls, we will receive in retirement. We should be wall-less. Relate with everybody with God’s kind of love.

*Mentoring

The act of mentoring helps in raising committed followers who would help keep the phone ringing as they seek knowledge on things of importance.
To ensure continued engagement in retirement, we should raise people who share similar ideas with us.

*Specialty/resourceful

It is common to see most top managers turn down invitations to give keynote addresses or be a discussant at conferences. What they don’t know is that such conferences help position them for the future.
A good resource person, will remain relevant at public events even in retirement.
The platform you reject today may be sought tomorrow and you wouldn’t get it.
To keep your phone ringing, ensure you take advantage of every good platform to portray your skill.

Life is transient. It keeps changing. Hence nothing is permanent. Your phone that is always put on silence mode today, to ward off calls, will tomorrow be active without calls. Ensure you do all that is necessary to enable you finish life well and strong.
